Guess no one's gonna post here.   Crying or Very sad

So, I'll regale y'all with some stories about my beloved Truman (after Capote).  He was a handsome (in a Harold MacMillan way) Border Collie-Black Lab mix.  The sweetest temperament, but the sneakiest canine you'd ever imagine.  Never was there a dog like my Truman.  I would constantly admonish him:  "Truman!  Use your brain for good not evil!"

This spring weather reminds me of him, because among his many talents Truman loved to garden.

We had a promising loquat in the backyard.  It was growing tall and straight, just a sapling a bit more than 1 inche in diameter and over 6 feet tall.

Truman and Gracie (also now gone) were in the back, doing whatever they did to amuse themselves.  I called them in for chow-chow and Truman came bounding in, wearing a very pleased expression.  He was very proud of something significant.

So, I went into the backyard and found the loquat sapling chewed off at ground level, the length of the tree chewed into perfect 6-inch-long pieces.  I swear.  The sticks were in a pile.  He came running out and nosed me, wanting me to pick up the sticks and play "toss."  I did.  Who knows what possessed him to do such a thing.  After we got over the shock, Carl and I had a good laugh.  Thank goodness the fig tree was much larger!

i'll post a couple of pix of carole...but i have to take them first.

i have a bunch, taken when she was a wee one, but nothing from the past couple of months...she's as big as a full size cat now...and just barely 6 months.

Carol???  Similar personalities???

Yeah one of these days.

My furry friends have almost always been domestic hand-me-downs from friends or mutual acquaintances, or feral, or wild - they've arrived in my home or at my doors on their, or someone elses volition, not mine.

Candy was an elderly small white poodle who a co-worker rescued from the Humane Societ after the previous owner was transferred out of town, and abandoned her there.
Candy was the epitome of a lapdog and always had to be close to one of the family (one-year old daughter, wife, me). Candy was terrified if left alone; when she would awake from a nap and find herself alone she frantically cried as she scrambled to find one of us.  I would carry her to/from our Biera Mar cottage to the beach after she got too old to climb the dunes.

Then another hand-me-down appeared in our lives after we moved to Summer Haven - Krishna, a set in his ways aloof and eccentric Siamese with a bent tail (momma cat had nibbled some LSD at FSU), left with us when his "owners" moved on.  Krishna lived  and was fed outside by our dock on the Summer Haven River and was rarely seen by us.

A couple of years passed, and Candy - as was her wont when my daughter and I would be out fishing from the dock - curled up by the bathtub as my wife bathed.  And silently passed on.
Hearing my wife scream when she realized Candy had died, my daughter and I ran to the house, surprisingly intercepting Krishna who also was hightailing it and meeting us at the door and entering with us - the first time he'd ever been inside the house.

I removed Candy to prepare her for the burial services, and Krishna - to our utter amazement - immediately began assuming the postures, positions and behavours which Candy had perfected over the years.  My daughter, then 3 or 4, had never even touched/petted Krishna prior to that evening!

Through the following years, at Summer Haven, and after our move to Zorayda Ave., Krishna remained a Candy clone, never out of sight of a family member, imitating her behaviour in every way.

My current furry friends are Abert's squirrels, a/k/a long, silky eared squirrels
http://www.google.com/images?hl=e...;tab=wi&q=abert%27s+squirrel+
and rock squirrels
http://www.google.com/images?q=ro...amp;source=og&sa=N&tab=wi .

I am visited by four Abert's and a mom/pop pair of rock squirrels daily when weather permits.

Each of the six adults has its own unique personality and behaviour and "personal space" demands - later in the year the moms will bring their new pups, and each pup will also develop  unique traits.

Much like feral cats, where each kitten in each generation establishes unique voice, vocabuleray and interactions with other animals, including with human ones.

My favorite Abert's was born last summer, and immediately became my "pet," running to greet me when (s)he sees me out on a walk, and napping on my shoulder when I sit in the sun and read.  And wants breakfast (a roasted in the shell peanut) each morning.  If I don't see it arriving on my porch rail (I view the bird feeders and porch from my recliner while watching TV/internet screen), it will skitter back and forth a couple of times, attempting for eye contact through the window.
Karmically, as I type, it just arrived - and I'm getting the big stare!

If I don't go out an give him a peanut, (s)he will tightrope walk my iron gate to be able to lean over and rap the window ---- as right now.

If I still don't go out it will leap on the window, and then slide down the glass top half until it can grasp the screen on the bottom half and hang there ---- as at this moment.

Time to go and hand out breakfast
(it daintily takes the peanut from my fingers).

I'm back inside now, and the Abert's is swinging in a feeder eating corn, the rock daddy is on the table stuffing its cheeks, and towhees, bluejays, and finches are pickin' and peckin.'
tsiya

When I moved in with the kids a few years back the cats, 6 at that time, put up with me but they were a little aloof, except for Missy.
She moved into my room and took over. Now she doesn't want anyone entering the room but me, she bristles up at everyone else, cat or human. The big tomcat Loki could come in for a while but he is persona non grata now. I don't know what he did to get checked off on her list.

Seriously, if he is ailing I am so sorry.  Maybe he just can't negotiate the stairs (if there are any)?

Bier,
What lovely stories about Candy and Krishna. I'll remember both--and certainly pass along to my furkid-crazy friends.

Oh, squirrels! Such yentas!  No matter what species!  They can't wait for anything, seem to enjoy chiding humans and furkids, and have realized how quickly humans can be trained to give them treats!   Very Happy

I love the tapping sequence! NO excuses!  You get out there with that peanut!

Tsiya,
Great pic--she's so beautiful anyhow, but against the vivid blue background--awesome!

Yeah, who knows what they "tell" each other, but when the rules are laid down that's the end of the story.  No trespassing!  Very Happy

What a marvelous thread!  (Sorry it took me so long to get here.)

I absolutely love hearing these pet tales...and what clever pet names, all of you!

My family says that my husband and I talk about our new puppy waaaaaaay too much.  But it's what childless couples do.  And, quite frankly, it's payback time.

The way I figure it...I've listened attentively to millions of gushing, new parents.  I coo and say "what a pretty baby" even though it's a lie.  (Newborn humans are hideously ugly to everyone except their mothers and grandparents.)  I've attended, gift in hand,  a zillion kids' baby showers, birthdays, christenings, first communions, t-ball games, bar/bat mitzvahs, confirmations, football games and graduations (which they apparently do at the end of every single grade now).

So, yeah, I expect everyone in my gigantic family to pretend to love hearing my latest dog story and be thankful that they're not getting an invitation to his Bris.

I've always had retrievers....a flat coated, several labradors and two goldens.  Some girls, some boys, some purebread, some mixes, some rescues.  Loved them and spoiled them all with reckless abandon.

My current golden retriever is a sweetheart and a real looker.  I got to pick him out and my husband got to name him..."Walker", for Herschel, of course.  He does kind of have Herschel's build...like a brick shithouse.

He was already 5 months old when we got him, so this is a giant puppy (now 8 months old), weighing in at about 75 pounds.  His size is deceiving because the brain is all puppy.  He's still soft and squishy like a puppy and he moves like a puppy...hopping and leaping and running crooked.  And he always carries a stuffed animal around in his mouth like a security blanket.

Yeah, he's a big ole mama's boy right now.  He follows me everywhere, doesn't know how huge he is, doesn't know his name, doesn't come when you call him, moves when you try to step over him, thinks the 2 of us can fit into a tiny laundry room together...and a recliner together...

And I love every bit of it.

I've got a bunch of pictures of the little fella, most of them taken on my phone...so if you're expecting Tsiya quality photos, you're going to be disappointed.

If I can't figure out how to get them posted here today, I might try to sweet talk Guido into helping me out.
tsiya

You can get a free account at Photobucket. You'll need to size the images to no more than 700 pixels wide or Guido will have a hissy fit. Very Happy
auntmartymoo

Thanks Bob.  I think I opened a photobucket account a long time ago, but unfortunately there is still the problem of not knowing how to get the pics out of the phone and into the bucket!
auntmartymoo

Going to try to email a couple of pics to Guido.  Maybe a little puppy picture from when the breeder stretched him out into a show dog pose...and a current one of him in all his 75 pounds of glory.   Very Happy
tsiya

Can you get the images into your computer? I know almost nothing about cellphone cameras.

Not only all those celebrations, but listening to endless tales of ear aches, runny noses, colds, shots, and on and on yada yada yada.  (Don't forget to invite your entire family to Walker's post-neutering celebration, gifts mandatory!  Laughing )

No one wants to hear about Rupert's or Henry's annual check-ups, or twisted paw, or allergies!!! So, yeah, payback, AMM.  Ain't it a bitch?  For them!!!

Such great stories about Walker!  75 lbs. and all gangly abandon! What fun! What's his favorite toy?  I have a feeling he has a ton, scattered all over! He's living the life of Riley!  How does he react to thunderstorms?

We call their toys "baa-baas," because the very first toy we got our first dog (Bisbee) was a lamb.  It was lambie-pie for a long while, then by the time we adopted Rupert, his toys all became baa-baas.  And so has everyone else's after that.

Carl found baa-baas called "Dogzillas" at WalMart.  They are dinosaur shaped, no long tails.  And when squeezed or bitten, they make a weird sound (not a squeak).  Henry is very happy to play with his--running with it, tossing it in the air, shaking it (all for the kill).  Rupert, on the other hand, bites it a couple of times to make sure the sound is there and then performs surgery to remove the noise maker!

Takes him about a minute to focus, ask for the scalpel, and then excise the (in the case of Dogzilla toys) 5-in. long-noise making device.  After that, he eats some plastic and then settles in for a lonnnnnng chew-and-drool on some part of the Dogzilla, usually the felt crest along its back.

Everyday is a surprise, living with a dog!  A happy, wonderful, loving surprise!

Gorgeous photo, Tsiya.  I'm not really a "cat person" though I do believe they are truly extraordinary creatures.  Your photo is magical.

And Puc, you are such a sweetheart for responding to my long, boring dog post.  Walker is being neutered today.  (The event is Invitation Only...no gifts, please.)  You are correct in assuming that he has tons of toys scattered about....always.  They really are like security blankets for him.  Whenever anyone comes to the door, he grabs one in his mouth and wags his entire back end on his way to greet them.  It's pretty damned cute, not that I'm partial or anything.  His favorite toys are 2 pink pigs...one is soft and floppy and the other is one of those tuff toys.

I love the name Truman...for Capote.  So clever!  I'd need a herd of dogs to cover all of my favorite authors...and favorite characters, too.

I emailed Guido 3 pictures of Walkerdoodle, but I'm not sure if he got them, or has had time to size and post them...or maybe I didn't suck up and beg and grovel enough.

Gosh Guido, Did I mention that you're looking a lot taller since I've returned.  And have you been working out?  My, my my.  What big muscles you have.  You must be the tallest, darkest handsomest fella here at bumrejects.  It's so easy to see why Mom loved you best.

Roo to the vet's where they had Thundershirts in stock.  Both Rupert and Henry are "scairdy cats" when it comes to loud noises.  Not to mention separation anxiety.  Rupert actually says, "Heh-ROOOOOO!" when we come home!

Anyhow, here is the link for Thundershirts:

Will let you know whether they work!

AMM,
How is Walker doing after his operation?  Hope he tolerated everything well!  Did he get a new and special toy to celebrate his new neuteredness???

Had some doggies and named them all after characters in To Kill A Mockingbird.  Each one met untimely deaths--mast cell cancer, congenital heart problems, and so on.  I was very leery about naming Truman.  Wanted to call him Jem or Dill, but settled for the author.  Tru didn't stay as long as he could have, either.  Broke my heart.   Jinxed?  I don't know, but no more names from novels!!!

I haven't posted 'cause I thought stories about my furbabies would be boring, except to me.  I have a great house on a nice piece of property, not so great job, but my little pups own me, lock, stock and barrell, and I love every minute of my time with them.  Their names are Sammy, Jasmine (me), Jade and Ruby.  They have allowed me into their lives because I feed them, give them a great home, with their own fenced in back yard, and lots of love, and trips to the vet  It is so incredible to watch them in their world, they are so simple, but so smart.  They have a pecking order in their world, and I have to fight to be alpha dog, which I sometimes don't win with Sammy.  Sammy is 6, Jasmine is 5, Jade is 5, Ruby is going to be a year old on July 4th.  I am truly amazed at how they get along, and there are no politicians running their lives.  They have their own code of ethics.

When I lost Benjamin and Sonny during the last 5 years, I was told they had a great life because of me, my response was, I had a great life because of them.

OK, enough.  I didn't want to do this, but I just did.
puc reducks

Glad you did, Jasmine!  Great story!  I love to read about people and their furbies.  Esp. the people who "get" them.  I am in awe that you've maintained the alpha dog status!  Of course, you don't know what the say behind your back!!!   Cool

I'm happy as omega dog.  "Happy" because as such, it's my "work" to care for their every need!  Sometimes "Mommy" gets a kick out of pulling a fast one here or there, but they catch on too quickly to allow much to become a bad habit on my part.   Wink

Is Ruby getting special chow-chow for her 1st birthday?  Because Roo and The Hen are rescue dogs, we don't know their birthdays, so celebrate their adoption dates.  Rupert is very fond of lamb, so he'll (and Henry) get that on June 11.  Henry is nuts for cheese, so he'll (and Rupert) get that on April 21.

Another treat they love is Frosty Paws! If you've never bought them, you gotta!  Every dog we've shared the house with has loved them!!!  Look in the ice cream section, top shelf.

Ruby is getting her favorite dog treats.  There is a lady at the flea market out on 207 who makes dog treats, and the dogs are crazy about them.  "Chucky's" is the name, after her dog.  I'll look for Frosty Paws.  Sam and Jazz love peanut butter and that's how I get pills down their stomachs.  I have to be a little more creative with Jade and Ruby.

Sam, Jasmine and Ruby aren't rescues, but dogs no one wanted.  Jade is a rescue from an abusive puppy mill and it has been amazing to see how she has blossomed in the 2 years she has been with me.

Flea market on 207?  THE flea market?  I'm not sure.

Haven't tried peanut butter for pills, only because cream cheese and braunschweiger work so well. So do little lumps of Mighty Dog.  They get wedges of Mighty Dog smooshed into their dry chow.  Something Carl started ages ago.  Sheesh.  Like they all haven't been spoiled enough!  Henry likes his dry chow dry, but Rupert is now fussy.   Rolling Eyes

If no one wanted them, then they were rescued--to my way of thinking.   Smile  That's wonderful about Jade blossoming!!!  Trust and love, love and trust. Can't beat that combination.

Will look for Chucky's next weekend!  Thanks!

No kidding!  He was hoping to spend the weekend in Hawaii to recuperate, yet he seemed pretty happy with the bunny toy we got him.  So happy, in fact, that he ripped the sweet bunny's face off Friday night.   Shocked

My boy is not a careful surgeon like Puc's doggie.  Walker will randomly select a victim and shred it into bedding...usually passing out in the middle of the carnage.

But luckily he is not afraid of thunder!  Thanks heavens...my last golden was terrified of everything and everyone.  It's heartbreaking to see a dog in such a state.  I had never heard or thundershirts until you posted about them.  Are they a new invention?

An update on my Walker pictures...
Our kind benefactor Guido has received my pictures and will edit and post them when he has a minute.

Yeah I thought that too until that big dumb puppy didn't have the sense to leave them alone.  When Nik was about 9 months old I heard a terrible racket in the back.  Ran into the bedroom and Nik had is size 10 paw on the cats head with a hunk of tail in his mouth pull with all his might.  The cat had a hunk of Nik but the lunk was immune to it.

Da which way did he go George???

Beautiful dog - how old?  Here's an ooh ahh and one for Puc
auntmartymoo

Thanks, Jasmine.  He's 10-months old...and humongous!

But luckily, he's so relaxed and amiable...I can (and do) take him with me everywhere.

coebul

I take mine most everywhere weather permitting.  If it is to hot out I usually get a baby sitter the little shit eats my house.
OhwhatthehellI'tryit

Pretty Pup.

Mine is a choco lab, 90 lbs., 4 yrs. old.  Still thinks she's 3 months.  One of the smartest pets I've ever owned besides my border.  I let her know one of the newbies on our farm is a baby?  And immediately it's a tail wagging nose licking encounter..  She's a great dog.. Smile

Me too!  I have a sweet girl next door who loves to puppysit Walker.  I have her come over and hang out with him sometimes when he's been crated too much.

I haven't given this guy much of a chance to destroy the house.  He was nearly six months old and crate-trained when I got him, so he likes the crate and is happy to stay in there when we're out.

And I'm really enjoying the crating.  I had never done it with any of my previous retrievers...boy would it have saved me a bundle on home repairs!

Walker is the lazy sort of dog who rarely looks for trouble...but if he comes across something that is right at nose height, he'll give it a taste.  I've got a few gnawed window sills and chair legs to prove it.

Of all my dogs, he has destroyed the least amount of stuff.  Of course, I previously had more than one at a time.  Some would work in tandem.

I can imagine the strategy sessions..."You yank the cable cord off the outside of the house, and I'll bite it off, ok?"  Or, my favorite..."You pull the starter handle on the lawn mower out as far as you can, and I'll chew the rope off down at the end"

The females were the worst.  One learned to open the fridge.  Another learned to jump up and hit the garage door opener.  The boys usually stuck to the easy stuff...knobs on the gas grill, gutter downspouts, shoe moulding, drywall.

Wish some of you guys would put up pics, too!  I wanna see white dogs and poodles and chocolates and (ach!) even some cats!

sonji is a run of the mill tabby, as is:

kasim, (10 yrs) whom i refer to as "porkbutt", to the general outrage of the family, is the master of the house and a truly immense (but not fat) feline. he graciously allows us to live in the house and provide him with food when his efforts to maim, kill, rape and disembowel the local wildlife prove fruitless.

I'll put up some Sunday, leaving for Savannah in the am for a little r&r and missing the brats already.  I have 4 girls, the oldest Sammy (bijon), is alpha female (well we vie for that position), Jasmine (bijon poodle) is a putz who just likes to eat sleep, walk and has to put up with Sam trying to hump her (the dominance thing), next is Jade (poodle bijon), who is my docile rescue who is still a little skittish, but fits in fine with the pack, next is Ruby (maltese), who is 1 year old and is still into puppy things, but it is amazing what the rest have taught her, not good, I assure you.

They have a fenced in area where they play, and do whatever dogs do, and a cat got into their territory one night, and I was amazed how these sweet things went after the cat.  It was terrified.  I had to go outside and rescue the little thing before it was really hurt.  On a positive note, no cats will venture into that area again.

Your dog is beatiful AMM

have you seen a vet about this?
what does fu think about this interesting development?
however, i'm glad that you're staying but engagement is out of the question...that would make me a bigamist, which does not (for the benefit of those living in flagler estates) equate to an italian fog.

Sorry, no photos here (no camera); but a photo of Ms. Lilly, "my" 8# five-year-old orange tinted white mixed heritage bijon/?/poodle is featured on the logo of the local St. Augustine/St. Johns Co. Kindred Spirit pet sitting business - with advertising magnets and stickums widely distributed.

But lets face it - until you get to know the individual personalities and behaviours of bijon poodles "they all look alike".

I say "my" because I only share the care, companionship and custody of the dogs and cats with my human companion and soulmate of 40 years - and their primary home is with her (we've always maintained separate homes).

Ms. Lilly was rescued in Albuquerque NM to be a companion for Zoey, "our" fifteen-year-old 13# black poodle/?/terrier mix.  Zoey lived with an elderly lady in Gainesville FL during her puppyhood and early life, then was dumped on the streets when the lady died and the heirs didn't want to be bothered with her.  She was saved from the gas chamber by my companion many years ago, and now is in her dotage, but not in pain (sorta like me).

Prior to Zoey being adopted Silver, a tri-colored one-loppy-eared Australian Shepherd/European Shepherd mix with one blue eye - rescued as a pup in Phoenix AZ - blessed our lives for 16 years.

She was well known to some lurkers here at bumrejects, and her ashes are buried near her favorite lake on Anastasia Island.

Silver's companion for the last half dozen years of her life was Scaredy Cat, so named because my companion - then living in Miami Lakes FL - after hearing strange noises for a couple of days from under the hood of her car (and thinking a belt was slipping) stopped at a garage and the mechanic extracted a barely moving lump of filthy kitten, with eyes not yet opened!

Cat's PTSD lasted her entire life, but she found solace with Silver, her first sight when her eyes opened, albeit rarely feeling a human touch.

Bickering on the Animal Companions thread???

SHAME ON ALL YOU SKUNK APES!!!

AMM,
Walker is such a handsome laddie!  Can you post a profile pic?  Sounds silly, perhaps, but I once knew a Blue Tick Hound whose profile was exactly that of British PM Harold MacMillan.  And my now-departed Truman:  Such a handsome face and dispositiion to match!

Love, love, love the blue octopus about to be rendered into a gazillion pieces of fluff and fabric!  Had me LOL--and Lawdy knows, I needed that!

Yes, the nicknames are great fun!  Especially that they answer to them!  Over the years we've had Queen Bee, Poochie-Puppaloochie, Bubbe, Stubby Chubby, Chihuahua Head (a friend offered that one), The Bark-uumer (as in The Vacuumer), Roopie Poopie, Henny Penny, Disaster Dawg, She Who Must Be Obeyed (same dog as Queen Bee), Beeper, and dozens other terms of endearment.

I can only imagine what they call us:  Get My Dinner, Wench; Take Me Walkies, Bubblehead, and so forth.

I get 15 minutes per day on computer, so likely I won't be here for a while more.

Please look for NEW THREAD, which I have created for my rancorous beloveds.

It's not too hard keeping them clean, since they are small and they mostly stay on the porch when I'm at work.  They do have their moments of filth though and then it's from porch directly to bathtub.  Savannah was hot, hot, hot - about 10 degrees hotter than St Augustine, but really enjoyed River Street, the food, fireworks and the barges coming in on the Savannah River, pushed along by the tug boats.  I have a new found respect for the tug boat captains and their ability to maneuver barges into the docks.

Sorry, Puc.  I don't have a current picture of Walker's profile...he never stops wiggling around long enough!

But I thought you might get a kick out of this baby picture of him with his breeder "stacking" him in a little show dog pose.  She color-coded the pups in the litter with different nail polish colors...mine was Mr. Pink.

I felt the same way and dug in my heels for years about opening a photobucket account.  But it was so idiot-friendly (a must for me) and fast...and free.  Now I'm mad at myself for not doing it sooner.  And one of the big plusses is that you don't have to give them any personal information.

Hmmmmm, that just might be a George Clooney profile, AMM!  Or...Montgomery Clift!!!

Thanks for the info about photbucket!  Sounds do-able for me if it truly is idiot proof!
