City Commissioner Errol Jones

St. Augustine Police chief calls for FDLE investigation into Errol Jones arrest

October 24, 2011

St. Augustine Police Chief Loren Lueders said Monday in a prepared statement that he will ask the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for an independent investigation into the arrest Saturday night of Commissioner Errol Jones of a charge of resisting an officer.

Lueders said, "The St. Augustine Police Department treats all of our citizens the same. We apply the law fairly and equally to everyone. We stand behind our officers' decisions in this situation and we believe we did not do anything wrong."

He said he has conferred with the City Manager John Regan and suggested the FDLE probe to answer any concerns of our citizens.

Jones was arrested Saturday at a family disturbance. Jones has said that the officer on the scene overreacted and that he did nothing that justifies his arrest.

Jones spent Saturday night in the St. Johns County Jail. He posted $500 bond Sunday and was released. The charge is a misdemeanor.

Kudos to Lueders and Regan to have promptly made the request to FDLE.  Too often in the past St. Augustine City Chiefs and St. Johns County Sheriffs have attempted to maintain a "Blue Wall" without independent investigation.

Jones is a friend, and I've admired most of his decisions as City Commissioner  through the years, but that doesn't have relevance to this incident, or to past alcohol-related incidents of record.  And I've tipped more than a few glasses with him since he returned to St. Augustine.

Florida Department of Law Enforcement finds that 'everything was handled properly' in Commissioner Jones arrest
St. Augustine Police Release FDLE Finding

Posted: October 28, 2011 - 2:34pm

From staff
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has reviewed the case file of the arrest of Commissioner Errol Jones and found that “it was in-order and completely investigated,” according to St. Augustine Police Chief Loran Lueders.

The FDLE found no allegations of officer misconduct other than what Jones claimed.

The FDLE does not make decisions about the whether the arrest was valid or whether there was probable cause to arrest. That is up to the State Attorney’s Office, Lueders wrote.

“FDLE does not have the resources to investigate misdemeanors that are already completed by the investigating agency,” Lueders wrote. “As a courtesy to the City of St. Augustine, they were willing to review the case and give their opinion which was that everything was handled properly and the case was complete.”

Rumor has it that Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson have arrived at Jacksonville Int'l Airport and are heading for St. Augustine.

Is this THAT big a deal?

OK, I will ask:

Jones said, via his lawyer Patrick Canan, that Jones wishes to be "vindicated."

Anyhone care to proffer what that means?  In Jones's world, of course.

In Errol's world "vindicated" would mean a jug wine where the indicated date is in months, not years.

Nope.  But I'd like to hear Al Sharpton rhyme it!

Vindicated.  Sophisticated.  Exasperated.

Matriculated.  Defibrillated.  Enunciated.  Expatriated.

Scrutney...?

Uncinated = bent, as opposed to straight forward, e.g., 'Chicago is known for its bent politicians'.

Only because Guido would frown on its 'ad hominem' use in referring to "the usual suspects"' logic here at bumrejects.

Ahh, but the dear padre doesn't seem to be around right now, so it's the perfect time to get in a little "ad hominem"!  Wink
