Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Our local supermercado is having a tequila tasting at 5 p.m.

As it - the Triangle Grocery - is located on Hwy 14, The Turquoise Trail - a constantly curving and mountainous highway between Albuquerque and Santa Fe where it's difficult to speed, we should all be safe - after all this is the "wild west."

I don't have a "designated driver" but a cowboy friend neighbor has promised to let me ride "bitch" back home - the horse knows the way - if I don't cadge a vehicle ride, or end up elsewhere.

Trivia (or maybe not?): Cinco de Mayo may be really much more important to U.S. history to Mexican history.  The invasion of Mexico by Emporer Napoleon III and the Hapsburg Maximilian diverted a lot of money which was supporting the southern rebels and the Confederacy in the U.S. Civil War.

When the Mexicans defeated the French Army (undefeated in the previous half-century) on May 5, 1862 (Cinco de Mayo) at Puebla, Mexico, the French decreased even more their financial support of the Confederacy.

Then the next year, after Gettysburg, U.S. Union General Sheridan moved his U.S. troops to the Mexican border, where many changed their uniforms to fight with the Mexicans - with Sheridan's promise they would be accepted back into the U.S.Army later, with their time fighting for Mexico credited as U.S.Army service.

Interestingly, 150 years later, the U.S. military recruits about 8,000 non-citizens a year - most of them Mexican citizens - with a total of almost 30,000 on active duty, including in Iraq and Afghanistan.
