Remember that song from "Westside Story"?...

"Somethin's coming, somethin' big...."

I have one of those feelings.

I'm having one of those feelings right now -- time to get fixed and head out to happy hour at Golden NM.

I'm in a New York state of mind, but...

"Give my regards to Golden,
Remember me to La Cienaga..."

Wish I could recall name of watering hole in Golden from 1975.

Have some fun!

You go ahead and get fixed.  I on the other hand will remain un-fixed thank you very much.

The oldtimers I ask always refer me to the Mineshaft Tavern (longest bar in New Mexico) in Madrid, a couple miles north of Golden, rebuilt by Oscar Huber after it burned down in 1944 and still in full swing now as it was in the '70s: http://www.legendsofamerica.com/p...c/MadridNMMineShaftTavern-500.jpg
Madrid and the Mineshaft were the settings for the Disney flick "Wild Hogs" a few years ago.

The only store left in Golden is the Henderson General Store, which was earlier known as Riccon's (Mrs. Henderson's parents).

My "happy hour" was with friends in one of the old mining cabins behind (east) of the store, which have been converted to private cottages.

I want to say The Golden Inn, but that is likely a mismemory.

Definitely not the Mineshaft.

Ah, well.

Golden was never "bustling," but it did have more than one store!

Thanks for the new low-down!

It is great membership is growing.  But we have several that have joined but do not post.  And we have one that has done a good bye cruel world and quit posting.

I would encourage those that do not post or post seldom to join the group and ad something to the discussion.

One poster on another site St Augustine's record lied about this site saying posts have been deleted for content.

Patently untrue.

Even though I do not expect her back she is welcome to return as long as she understand that basic rules of the road here.  NO AD HOMINEM ATTACKs.

If she and others don't post for a say 3 month period of time I will deactivate them and have them rejoin if they are interested.

I think many of the lurkers are coming because of the interest in the local "In the news" and the "Local politics" topics.

Also Coebul (that political hack) has been cruising the FOX Discussion forum on Facebook and think some of the interest has come from there.  Not sure but my hats off to C for spreading his Conservative seed around...  Idiot.

I hope others here are doing the same.  We need members that add different ideas to the forum.  All political persuasions are encouraged here.

There is only one person I will never allow to post hear but the last time he stormed off he said he would never come back so I doubt that is an issue.

Thanks for all the participation we are small but we are growing.

Yes, that is great news!

But don't you mean "excommunicate" not "deactivate," Padre???

Speaking of NM, I hear the fire and smoke are getting better there.  This area is being inundated with smoke from southeast Georgia and Flagler county fires.  We had an abundance of rain today which helped, but damn, I the weather patterns are weird.
bieramar

Global Swarming?

We're in an historic drought with winds 30 to 55 mph almost every day in most areas - single digit humidity, temps up to 107° F. on the high deserts and high plains.  The monsoon season is here, but the monsoon rains aren't.

Wells are dry 'most everywhere - lots of relatively wealthy retirees in their million+ dollar homes on multi-acre spreads are trucking water - $1 a gallon delivered is the going price.

Here in the mountains it has been 90° more days this year than all together over the last five years (but only for about 15 to 20 minutes about 5 p.m. each day).

Wildfires closed all Interstates into Arizona, Colorado and Texas for a couple days last week - all the federal and state-owned wildernesses are closed to hiking and camping.

well we've done it again...broken another record of sorts.

yesterday we had 19 people on line at one time.

whoop de doo.

now if some of those people would actually (what was it that game show mo-fo used to say?) enter and sign in please.

one of our local activists likes to use the term "anonymouse" to refer to people who post on message boards under nicknames...he uses it as a pejorative.

the denizens of this forum are not nearly so judgmental and we wear his scorn as a badge of...well, let's just say we get a kick out of it

doctor, lawyer, sheriff or shithead, you're welcome here, under your real name or a nom de plume.

we don't care who you are and thanks to the miracle of cyberspace, we really don't mind if you smell like cabbage.

if you've seen the other message boards that have come and gone since the demise of "talk of the town" and were appalled at what amounted to an online version of a frat house food fight, have no fear...we're a pretty civil crew and we tend to treat each other as we'd like to be treated.

you've got an opinion.

we'd like to hear it.
bieramar

Simple.

The word is spreading -- and folks are flocking from the MSN to read the thoughts and opinions of "the most trusted name in cyberspace."

It most probably is the apparent brilliance of the wit and wisdom of all the participants here which causes some to hesitate to post.

Welcome back I hope all is well with you and yours.

jasmine wrote:

well if i understand the question, we're both.
and neither.

guido set up this site in november when the bum shut down the plazabum site, for what appeared to be the final time.

the bum had re-booted it twice before...once in august of last year and again in september, wiping out all existing posts.

since then he's brought it back several times and it can be found in it's current form here.

since everyone here was a member of the original plazabum forum, when it went off the air (so to speak) guido set up this place so we could speak our minds and all that happy horse manure. hence the name "bum rejects."

i'll always be thankful to plazabum for bringing the disparate elements of this board together and i have a soft spot in my heart for the old talk of the town board too....where most of us met for the first time.

but...i'm a bit of a narcissist and i like to think that what i write is, if not deathless prose, at least worth reading or i wouldn't have writ it.

and that's why i like it here.
i have a modicum of control as to whether my pearls of wisdom and golden nuggets of knowledge are flushed...or not.

jasmine

So, where are we?
coebul

I started TOTT v.2 and immediately turned the reigns over to PB because I didn't want to run a forum site.  Love posting but not very savvy when it comes to data bases and such.

We all stayed there for a while while PB finished PlazaBum.com and then when finished made an orderly move to that site.

To this day I don't fully understand what happened but to the best of my knowledge Plazabum.com was shut down in an effort to stop a law suit or something.  One day we had access and then the next we were going to facebook.

At this point Guido created this site.  Scrutney and I did the best we could to gather the flock and move them to this site but for some unknown reason my attempts to continue to gather the flock were thwarted by some one (I assume PB his self) deleted my posts.  And that was the end of that.

In the beginning there were like 4 or 5 of us and then there were 6, then 7 and so on...

Here is the deal!  In the last 5 years we have watched every forum this group has been associated with go down the tubes...  TOTT closed and we moved then that move got shut down because of viscous ad hominem attach on people, then TOTT v2 saw similar attacks several of us myself included would virtually root around in the mud.

We moved to PB and the same happened again.  It close due to those attacks.

Now we are here.  It is my opinion we are here because of ad hominem attacks not only ourselves but those outside this community.

It is because of these attacks that Guido will not allow them here.  It is the only hard and fast rule.

When Plazabum reincarnated itself I adopted a hard nosed attitude.  I will not be going back.  My attempts to keep the group together were stopped, my access to PB facebook blocked and my messages deleted.  And all this with out so much as a high, good bye or kiss my foot.

So I am here.  And here is where I will stay.
jasmine

Thanks.  When I came home last night, I didn't see anyone on this site, and then received an email from PlazaBum mailer requesting I join that site, so wasn't sure what was going on.  I guess it was a just quiet day yesterday for "the rejects."

I was doing a community service this weekend.  My company supports a program to get kids off the street.  They/we own several homes where kid can get their lives together, with job assistance, cloths, transportation, some cash .......

Every year we do a Burger booth at a local event.  I was the main burger chef.  I cooked and served 150+ breakfasts and probably 800 burgers, cheese burger, and Lumber Jack and Janes.

Needless to say my participation was limited the last three days.

We are open for business and ready to opine..  I wish PB the best of luck but for the moment I am staying here.

What a great way to spend the weekend, good for you.  Obviously, my little brain was a little confused.  It's like going to visit parents, and finding out they moved and didn't tell you Laughing

While that hasn't happened exactly.  I did have a client that sold the house out from under their son because he wouldn't move out.  Not didn't take the hint mind you he refused to move out.  We went to show the house and the guy who was going to buy it talked to us and we told him of the situation.  He laughed bought the house and told him to get out.

He refused and we had to call the sheriff.  They gave him a choice.  Move out with in 36 hours or go to jail.  He got out.

coe and i got used to that old dodge.

after the 2nd time, i checked with the postal service and got their new address.

Being in the real estate business is never boring.  I have been on all sides of a transaction in the last 10 years and it never gets old.  I had a guy who came into my office last year to sign documents for a refi, and he was so snockered he couldn't hold the pen.  I had to call the closing and boy was the loan officer po'd.  Found out later that the only reason the guy was doing the refi, was because the LO had talked him into it over several dozen martinis several weeks prior to the closing.

thanks jazz, i wish i didn't have to write it...someone has moved my cheese in a big way and i'm afraid that it was me.

the i.t. people at work have put me on the "a" list and made me a system administrator...in simple english that means i know my way around a computer well enough to load stuff into the server without risking a system meltdown. for someone of my generation, i'm pretty tech savvy or so i've been told.

but i am clueless when i am out of my comfort zone and believe me, i left that zone this afternoon.

i can deal with the fact that mozilla firefox doesn't do what i want it to do...but it pisses me off that i can't load spell check on my internet explorer without installing a bunch of crap ware along with it.

that and the fact that my itunes library is huge and that i'm going to have to reload it by hand because i can't find it on my external hard drive.(it's there...i know it's there, i listened to some of it this morning, on the old rig).

now of course i can buy an expensive data cable(a simple u.s.b. won't work) and import all the wonderful files (including genrecide) from my old unit...but chances are i'll reinstall all the malware and crap that i don't want on my new computer.

ain't technology grand?

edited to add:

i deleted the firefox browser and reinstalled it and it works great.
i am logged in on firefox and bum rejects recognizes me (that is, if i really am scrutney. sometimes i wonder.)

spell check is working fine (at least i think it is. it could tell me that i misspelled "paint" and i wouldn't know the difference.)

gee...now i get to build a new task bar.
i can scarcely contain my glee.

Hey Fellas...and Dearest Puc,

Just popped in to say hello.  I've gotten in over my head with some family obligations and haven't been able to find any time for recreational activities here at BR.  But I think of you rejects often and pray you're all doing well.
