Night of Lights

I remember the first Night of Lights and the counter arguments against 1) the taxpayers' costs to subsidize downtown merchants' profits, and 2) the coercion and mandates on those business owners/operators - many of whom barely hang on profitably anyway - to spend their hardearned dollars on white only lights.

In all the years since I've never seen a cost analysis published in regard to downtown sales - lots of articles about traffic and visitors, however.  Anyone know?

My personal druthers have always been against the Night of Lights as I prefer the manifold garish colors and eclectic designs of old traditions.

"Mandantory" is a concept all too popular with government types these days.
Them, and the horse they rode in on! Shocked

The best holidays ever since the Lights started was the year the lady who owned the pizza place on Hypolita across from Tocques Place had a huge tree in the courtyard covered with large colored lights.

She and Bill Lennon almost came to blows at Scarlett's after the lighting ceremony.

I am NOT in favor of mandatory lighting downtown for "Nights of Lights."

I say let's stop it right NOW, collect $$$ from the City and merchants et al. who pay for the electricity and donate the sum everyone would have paid to FPL to ANYONE WHO CAN CREATE A WEBSITE FOR THE 450TH!!!  Sheesh.  Priorities, people!

Read somewhere4 that AAA rated it as something like # 6 in the nation in terms of community lighting events.  Lots of tourists set great store by that.  I think it is worth the bucks.

I gotta admit though, that sure is a pretty sight coming into downtown across the bridge of lions ... and I'm not usually impressed by such things.
