New details are emerging about a Fruit Cove man who the St. Johns County Sheriff said died a "very violent" death. His body was discovered Friday, and his identity was determined Wednesday.

Daniel S. Somerson, 53, a former trucker, was an outspoken political activist, who hurled numerous allegations of corruption at the trucking industry and government.

Yet Somerson was also a poet who wrote two books and read at a Jacksonville theater, according to a variety of news sites. Reports said he taught science at a Jacksonville middle school.

Somerson also had ties to St. Augustine activist Ed Slavin.

A document from the Department of Labor shows that in 2003 Slavin represented Somerson who was seeking a dismissal of a complaint against Mail Contractors of America....

Somerson received national attention in 2004 when he because a suspect in the delivery of ricin, a deadly toxin, to the White House and the office of then Senate majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn.

=====

One more bizarre aspect of this developing investigation is that it was Slavin's actions in Somerson's case which ultimately led to his (Slavin's) disbarrment - emphasis in the excerpt below is mine:

--- excerpt from Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) Order following Appeal of an earlier ALJ decision ---

Evaluating Attorney Slavin's representation of Somerson, the ALJ also concluded, "This continuum of attacks, intimidation and harassment under the guise of representing a client constitutes an abuse of the administrative process. It wastes this Office's time and the valuable time of OSHA investigators. It perverts the use of an employee protection statute, the STAA. It violates an attorney's rules of professional responsibility, and constitutes a breech of the duty that an attorney owes his client".

Accordingly, the ALJ... stated that the Tennessee Supreme Court's Board of Professional Responsibility would be notified of Attorney Slavin's conduct in representing Somerson for a determination whether Slavin's conduct violated its Code of Professional Responsibility.

PS: I was going to headline this "Bloody Somerset Sunset in St. Johns County" but then realized that maybe some wouldn't recognize the allusion.

bieramar

She's interning at the Record, but has prior writing/editing  experience.  She was schooled at Florida State and UNC-Chapel Hill.

If you are going to pursue genealogy I suggest you use her full name Sheldon Renee Gardner.

Oh, sorry - I inferred incorrectly and was projecting, as you had typed with upper case "Sheldon GARDNER???"
