Wow Monday morning.  Not one single comment on any article or editorial.  Only two for an entire weekend.

It's three o'clock in the afternoon.

With all the bragging on the 'new deal" they have gotten three reader comments ---

from one reader ---

and she can't even contribute her own material ---

She seems to have taken to The Record like a duck to an oil spill.

i was bored lat night so i checked out the st augustine record.
and as my page was loading, in the upper right hand corner, my user id "scrutney" came up.

which i thought was strange because i was under the impression that all nicks and nom de plumes used on the record had been banished to the dustbin of cyberia.

so i clicked on the little scrutney icon and my 5 previous comments came up...but it seems that "scrutney" didn't make them.

they are now ascribed to some guy named bif richards.
the bif richards name is attached to my email account.
needless to say, it's not my real name, but the record doesn't know that.

and had my real name been on the account, i'd have been outed, my cover blown, my scrupulously hidden online identity exposed to the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune.

which pisses me off a little bit.
so i logged on to my other record account.
(it's always handy to have a couple lying around, especially if you want to start an on line argument with yourself)
that entity still lives as well and he's been outed too. and the name attached to the supporting email account is now prominently displayed on all of "his" comments.(and that name is a bit of a play on words and mildly offensive, go figure)

i wonder if we can sue?

I wrote the new publisher an email asking her directly if the real name schema would be retroactive. She resolutely said no and assured me that would not be the case.  That the "system" just couldn't do that.

So, the record's new publisher is either a completely clueless dolt about how their online publication works or she is just another corporate liar or both.

I was actually very pissed.  Retroactively implementing that policy was grossly irresponsible and unethical.

I read with absolute hilarity a column groaning about the "lack of participation", me thinks that lack may be manifesting in lost readership as well.  Sadly I foresee the Record is on borrowed time and life support at this point.

Overall, their new paradigm has turned their publication into a bowl of stale cold oatmeal.  Of course, putting a CFO in charge is rarely a good idea. I am sure her new plan looked great on her spreadsheet.  Sadly she seems to be much more interested in the view of her own colon than actual journalism.

PS Use Google Chrome with an "Incognito window" It's good for 5 stories, then close and open another one, read as much as you want.

i don't think i could read 5 stories a day on the record, before the gag reflex kicked in.

whatever...i'm busted.

scrutney and boy howdy have been ratted out by the record as bif richards and rip flatus respectively.

maybe it's the record's way of dipping a delicate toe into the seething torrent of investigative journalism.

tomorrows headline?:
"ripping the lid off anonymous commentary"

Biff Richards is a dick, but I like Rip Flatus, he's a standup kind of guy.
